Dear Abby: Pot may harm mental health

www.kansascity.com | 02/14/2008 | Dear Abby: Pot may harm mental health

First of all, I don't use marijuana or condone it's use. But this article is ridiculous. Marijuana use causes mental illness?

Research shows that regular use of marijuana may also lead to mental health problems. Youths who use marijuana weekly have double the risk of depression later in life and are three times more likely than non-users to have suicidal thoughts.

Ya gotta love researchers who can't understand that along with chickens you ALSO have eggs.

Well, she said "Mental Health Issues" which is very wide ranged. I know that Pot is not good for bipolars to smoke. Our brain cells die off alone without pot adding to it.

My shrink told me that marijuanna is not good for bipolars. I asked him this question...because I was in physical pain and thought pot would be a good drug :)

this is a controversial issue, while pot makes me delusional there is a lot of evidence that certain properties in it has antidepressant effect in many people and studies are being considered. I also know someone who responded poorly to all psych meds, used pot briefly for both mania and depression and then recovered completely with intensive meditation.

We are not all alike and doctors in general will say that pot is bad since it's illegal.

I'm in Gianna's camp with this...

The old chicken and egg discussion.

This researcher feels that drug use comes before disorder. Most feel disorder causes much of the drug use.

So that explains it! Gee, I thought it was my parents' fault.

All people who drink drinks with alcohol are alcoholics don't you know? (Joking)stepping into the addict angle of drug use. And don't forget that the legal long term use of psychiatric medicines is not the same as street drug addiction to illegal drugs, because a doctor wrote the prescription.
